DESCRIPTION:The debate will explore the critical and rapidly evolving nexus between digital innovation and defense and security – a cornerstone of the European Union’s strategic ambitions. In an era marked by geopolitical tensions, technological evolutions and evolving threats, the European Commission has articulated a clear vision to bolster Europe’s defence and security capabilities through digital transformation. The EU’s Defense Readiness 2030 strategy, the European Defence funding opportunities, and the recently published Drone Action Plan exemplify this commitment, emphasizing the importance of resilient, innovative, and integrated digital solutions. Amongst others, these initiatives aim to foster a secure digital environment, enhance operational capabilities, and ensure strategic autonomy by leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, 5G/6G, sensing, and data analysis. Our discussion will seek to understand how the European digital value chain, manufacturers, telecom operators notably, can support this new priority and contribute to the strengthening of security and resilience across Europe. We shall investigate how the growing importance of dual use technologies and digital advancements in areas such as AI, cybersecurity, 5G/6G, sensing, and data analysis are transforming defense and security capabilities. We shall also strive to understand what more Europe needs and how industry can further contribute to maintaining the innovative edge of our defence and security challenges. Finally, we shall investigate how EU financing opportunities can support those new developments.
