SUMMARY:How to protect minors online?
DESCRIPTION:A Joint Research Centre study shows that in 2022, 96% of EU 15-year-olds used social media daily and 37% spent over three hours a day on these platforms. Based on more than 40,000 adolescents in four EU countries, it links excessive use to poorer mental health, including higher risks of depression and anxiety. Features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, dark patterns and engagement-driven recommendation systems are already identified in EU reports and addressed in the DSA, notably Articles 25 and 28. Should the answer lie in stronger enforcement or new industry practices? This event aims to bring the views of the institutions, the industry and the NGOs to better tackle the issue of the protection of minors online.
