SUMMARY:Digital Omnibus: how to deliver genuine simplification while preserving fundamental rights
DESCRIPTION:The debate will examine how the Digital Omnibus can deliver meaningful simplification in practice, while maintaining effective privacy protection for citizens and providing greater legal certainty for European businesses. The proposal has opened an important debate among policymakers about the balance between simplification of the EU’s digital rulebook – on the one hand, addressing concerns that some changes could weaken data protection and privacy safeguards, and on the other hand if the proposal goes far enough to improve competitiveness by reducing regulatory complexity, fragmentation and compliance costs. Against this background, the debate will examine how simplification can benefit citizens and businesses while maintaining a high level of protection. Topics of discussion can touch on many specific subjects such as the interplay between GDPR and AI; the processing of special categories of personal data; how cookie rules can reduce consent fatigue while preserving meaningful choice and enabling online business; the role of privacy-enhancing technologies in enabling innovative data use; and how to future-proof the GDPR and ePrivacy framework.
