SUMMARY:The future of the European Standardisation System
DESCRIPTION:As Europe navigates an era of rapid technological transformation and intensifying global competition, the future of the European Standardisation System (ESS) stands at a critical crossroads. With the European Commission's 2022 Standardisation Strategy and the forthcoming evaluation of Regulation 1025/2012, the time is ripe to reimagine how Europe sets the standards that shape global markets, ensure regulatory alignment, and safeguard democratic values. This timely debate will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and civil society to explore how the EU can accelerate harmonised standards, lead on the international stage, and ensure the ESS remains inclusive, agile, and equipped for the future. As new technologies emerge and legislation tightens, businesses need clarity, citizens need trust, and Europe needs sovereignty — and it all starts with smarter, faster, more strategic standardisation. The event will address the following topics: The EU regulatory environment with its important set up as a Public-Private-Partnership. The role of industry and private sector’s stakeholders in leading standardisation efforts and contributing with their expertise; The ESS: Overarching challenges for the competitiveness of Europe and for innovation in technology; How to best balance speed, the role of NSBs, the industry needs, timeliness, quality and efficiency of the standardisation system? Safeguarding industry engagement, consensus building, inclusiveness and investment by all stakeholders, as well as the overarching principles set under the WTO/TBT. Ensuring a flexible and dynamic standardisation system able to accommodate the needs of key sectors. The functioning of the NLF and ways how to safeguard and strengthening it.
