The revamp of the bloc’s telecom rules is looming. But most of the EU member states remain skeptical and are questioning the need to slash obligations and loosen up merger rules. They pushed back the European Commission’s ideas to take European networks to the next level, echoed in Mario Draghi’s and Enrico Letta’s reports to reverse Europe’s competitiveness decline. President von der Leyen is setting up a task force to turn their recommendations into reality.

 

The much-awaited Digital Networks Act, expected this year, aims to boost the telecom sector: deploy the roll-out of 5G and fiber, make the lives of operators easier and foster an investment-friendlier climate. Will EU leaders agree on an adequate toolbox?
