The GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) took place in Barcelona from 26 February to 1 March 2018. The mobile industry’s most prestigious annual event in the world. A special programme of activities was designed by EIF and GSMA for MEPs in the context of the MWC. This included a Ministerial Programme and a tour of selected top exhibition stands for a hands-on experience of cutting-edge technology devices.

The main themes in this year's edition were 5G and AI, with demonstrations on the capability of 5G technology, and the adoption of AI and machine-learning in all sort of devices. It is expected that voice assistants will play a much bigger role in consumers’ digital life.

The MEP delegation was led by Pilar del Castillo (EPP, ES) and included Brando Benifei (S&D, IT), Michal Boni (EPP, PL),Gunnar Hökmark (EPP, SE), Miapetra Kumpula-Natri (S&D, FI), Catherine Stihler (S&D, UK), Roza Thun (S&D, PL) and Lambert van Nistelrooj (EPP, NL).
