On the evening of 7 October Andreas Schwab, MEP and EIF Political Member, invited EIF members and friends to take a fresh look at the proposed Network and Information Security directive.

In his opening remarks he quoted Commission vice-president-designate for the digital single market Andrus Ansip, who stresses that ensuring cybersecurity is crucial to finalise a Digital Single Market in Europe.

Matthew Ellard, Senior VP EMEA at Symantec, presented insights from inside the company. He stressed the necessity for protecting the “bricks and mortar” infrastructure where information lives and runs the economy. He also cited privacy as an important element of cybersecurity, and encouraged policymakers to find the right balance between data protection and the use of data for innovation and economic growth.

Paul Timmers, Director of the Sustainable & Secure Society Directorate at DG CONNECT, European Commission, was also asked to take the floor and reflect on cybersecurity in Europe. He focused his speech on the factor of trust as a key element for the digital single market.
